Every year, a large number of roads change. Speed limits are updated, businesses come and go, new roads are constructed and others are renamed. Reality is a roller coaster, and the challenge for mapmakers is to stick with it. To deliver maps that show reality as accurately as possible, these changes need to be processed quickly. In this article, we will look at the process of drawing our map to understand how we can provide our customers with accuracy up to centimeters in a row.
The formula
To achieve this, Tomtom invented a continuously integrated map-making platform, capable of continuously delivering up-to-date maps.
This platform enables us to quickly close the loop between the moment when real-world changes are detected and update the map on the user's device to the version that reflects this change.

How do we do this?
There is not a single method used to detect the change, but a combination of sources. Our multi-source approach connects data to survey vehicles, GPS traces, community input, government sources, and vehicle sensor data to create our maps for maximum attribution, accuracy, and maintenance levels, meaning their accuracy will not deteriorate over time.
For example, we work with local governments and road authorities to understand planned changes and use our global community of 600 million connected devices to possibly detect unplanned changes. These changes are linked to ensure the most accurate reflection of reality.
Next, we select only the part of the map that is affected by the change. We update the map and do a live quality check that assures accuracy. Then we merge the changed pieces back into the map as an incremental update. Since this quality ensures process transactions, the map database is continuously releasable.
Let’s go through each step:
Map users
The more users use our technology on the road, the more accurate the driving experience is. With nearly a billion people using Tomtom maps in devices around the world, drivers who choose to share map feedback with us help improve the quality of our data. Every month, we receive hundreds of thousands of consumer reports.

Sensor input
Whether from our own or partner devices, this data contains billions of test marks from 600 million connected devices every day.
Intelligent mapmaking
Through a combination of professional map-making methods and community input, we have accomplished a hybrid approach that ensures both efficiency and accuracy through fast cycle time and quality assurance.
Data is obtained and processed to generate changes. We match the daily test-derived geometry with our maps, often referring to sources such as imagery to assist verification. Using community input also helps us to create more smart plans of our mobile mapping van routes to achieve more in less time.
Transactional mapmaking
We process millions of real-world changes every week, from detection to quality assurance, from end to end. Users are then sent with high accuracy-confidence and faster cycle times that receive incremental updates.

Continuously releasable map database
A continuous releasable database enables us to give the user the fastest updates. Real-time quality assurance ensures that only reliable changes are included in a database that is always complete and seamless globally.
Incremental map updates
Users are able to update incremental maps for all features that get easy access to real-time and maps through multiple map distribution formats. Multinet-R Tomtom Maps distributes all high-quality content layers of the database into single, easy-to-use relational database models. As an industry leader in adopting navigation data standards (NDS), Tomtom modular offers plug-and-play runtime maps that are ready for use in NDS software applications. Our API provides streaming maps with complete flexibility and provide access to the latest possible map changes.
Covering the world
Our maps take the world forward every day. They cover more than 68 million kilometers of navigable roads in 164 countries and 35 regions.
